In addition to the Ryzen 7000 series, AMD also announced the ‘Mendocino’ apu, a chip designed for budget laptops, during the Computex trade show. Mendocino is based on Zen 2 cores and RDNA2 graphics, just like the chip in the Steam Deck. As such, it was hoped by some that the Mendocino would be suitable for (lighter) games as well, but that seems disappointing.

According to both celebrities leaky On Chinese social media and Angstronomics, which is still fairly new, Mendocino’s only two calculation units on board. That’s a quarter of the graphics cores in the Van Gogh apu taken from Valve’s handset. Not much more than ordinary games appear on the horizon.

Also, there are conflicting voices about the integrated GPU that will be found in every Ryzen 7000 processor. Previous rumors have stated that it will contain four cu, but Angstonomics claims there are only two, as with the Mendocino apu. calculation units Will be ready. AMD has not released any details about the igpu in the upcoming Ryzen generation other than the presence of RDNA2 graphics.

Incidentally, it’s not the first time a chip maker has named a product after Mendocino (a location in California): By the late 1990s, Intel already had a very popular Mendocino with its second-generation Celerons. In 1999, this CPU was named Processor of the Year (as it was then called) by Hardwareinfo.net. The story of these Celerons, which among other things are significantly overclocked, can be found in more detail here.
