Summer ends in North hemisphere. Just a few days away autumnwe can sum up the summer season with historical temperatures, strange behavior among marine animals such as killer whales or sharks, as well as mosquitoes, many mosquitoes. But the fact that the astronomical summer is over does not mean that the meteorological summer is over. And just before the start of the equinox, the temperature seemed to provide a small – very small – respite, but not the mosquitoes. Moreover, both these and other insects They seem to have suddenly increased their population.
There is actually an explanation for this, which coincides with the reason why we had so many mosquitoes this summer: changing of the climate. It may seem like we’re having a hard time blaming climate change for everything weird that’s happening to us, but it’s reality.
Actually, we have already seen this in autumn 2022. Mosquitoes need water and warm temperatures to lay eggs and grow from larvae to adults. DANA recently left in Spain. very heavy rains almost all over the country. There is water. And the temperatures, even though autumn is approaching, are still quite summer-like. All this assumes that mosquitoes still have ideal conditions for continued reproduction. It might have been more difficult without water, but we filled their territory with puddles for them to lay their eggs in, at the perfect temperature for their survival. We still have some insects left for a while.
Mosquitoes and climate change: a bad combination
Climate change has been occurring across the planet for some time. This summer 2023 has broken one historical temperature record after another, and this may just be the beginning. Precipitation overall has decreased significantly, with long periods of drought in most of the globe. But when they arrive, they arrive in a big way, with many episodes. heavy rains and floods.
mosquito larvae To become adults, they need standing water and high temperatures. Therefore, puddles left by rain, especially during floods, provide an ideal environment. Especially if the temperature is high. This is exactly what is happening with climate change.
What will the rest of the fall be like?
Accurate weather forecasts cannot be made more than 3-5 days in advance. However, given climate models and the evolution of recent months, some approximations can be predicted.
Thus State Meteorology Agency has already predicted that autumn in Spain may be much hotter and a little rainier than usual. Therefore we have again high temperatures, rain and stagnant water. It doesn’t look like we’ll be able to get rid of mosquitoes easily this year. Even after the equinox, we will have to continue to stock up on repellents, insecticides and even mosquito wipes.
All this can bring us, in principle, little more than some annoying bites. But we must not forget that rising temperatures can also change the populations of different mosquito species and lead to vectors of tropical diseases to places where they usually do not breed. There have already been isolated cases, and gradually they may become more common.
So, as we always say, there are plenty of reasons to fight climate change. Everyone chooses their own. There are plenty to choose from.
