Firefox Like Google Chrome, Mozilla announced an extension that lets you: translate webpages automatically The translation, the foundation specifies, takes place exclusively at the local level and in this way the browser does not collect data about the navigation of its users.

This is a very similar solution to the one already offered by Google and Microsoft: the respective tools also protect the user’s privacy. For now, the Firefox add-on cannot count on the extreme versatility of Chrome, the number of supported languages is still very modest. Mozilla has promised that several new languages will be added in the near future.

The tool was created in the context of: Project Bergamot, an EU-funded initiative involving the University of Edinburgh, the Charles University of Prague, the University of Sheffield and the University of Tartu. For years, researchers have been working on an innovative solution, a technology that uses machine learning to translate content into a foreign language even when there is no internet connection, using information and algorithms stored locally on the computer.

From this project was born Firefox translations It’s the first of – hopefully – a long list of products and initiatives to come out of Project Bergamot’s construction site.

Firefox Translations supports 12 languages, including Italian, English and German. There is also no shortage of Russian, Norwegian, Estonian and Czech.
