At the 20th edition of National Science and Technology Week, held this week at the Ulysses Guimaraes Convention Center in Brasília, Minister of Science Luciana Santos said: Official launch of the 30th edition of the Young Scientist Award Theme ‘Connectivity and Digital Engagement’.

In partnership with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Roberto Marinho Foundationreward suggested Recognition of young talents in the scientific field in Brazil.

During the launch ceremony, Minister Luciana Santos emphasized: “By launching the 30th edition of the Young Scientist Award, we renew the recognition of the excellent work produced by Brazilian researchers in seeking solutions to national challenges and improving people’s quality of life.”

Investing in scientific research will be offered to students and young researchers who are looking for solutions to some ‘problems’ that science has not yet solved.

30th edition of the Young Scientist Award

The theme of the 29th fair was determined as “Innovations for the protection of nature and social transformation”. At the event, awards were distributed in five categories, including Master and Doctor; Higher Education Student; High school student; Institutional Merit; and Scientific Merit.

The last edition of the award was announced in 2018, but was ‘paused’ following the start of the government of former president Jair Messias Bolsonaro. On this occasion, those selected were awarded prizes ranging from R$ 12,000 to R$ 40,000 for carrying out the research. The Young Scientist Award is a CNPq initiative that has been held since 1981.

“I never thought I could do research. This was my first contact with science. I saw a lot of passion fruit peels scattered on vacant lots around my city and started thinking about how to solve this problem. That’s where my research came from and I discovered a passion. Winning this award shows that we, even young people, can do science,” said Juliana Davoglio Estradioto, winner of the 2018 High School category, who developed research on a biodegradable plastic film made from agro-industrial waste derived from passion fruit.

The categories to be given in the 30th award are as follows: Master’s and Doctorate, Higher Education Student, High School Student, Institutional Merit and Scientific Merit. Applications for the Young Scientist Award will open in 2024 and research areas will be announced soon.
