BID will build its first electric vehicle production plant in Europe and will be located in Szeged, Hungary. In this way, they will be able to meet the demand on the continent with an assembly capacity of 800,000 vehicles per year. The Asian brand’s entry into Europe has been very fruitful, with five models introduced during 2023: Han, Tang, Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal.

BYD’s electric offensive will continue in 2024 through commercialization Signal Ucrossover SUV version Signal. It will also reach Europe Gullthe brand’s most economical electric car, priced at the equivalent of 11,000 euros in China, so it has huge potential for the continent.

One of the reasons why BYD chose Szeged (Hungary) is that they already have a bus factory in the country. Initially, the car plant will be independent from the battery plant, but over time they will become part of the same structure, simplifying logistics and possibly reducing costs.

The BYD plant in Europe will be operational between 2025 and 2026. The company has not announced which vehicles will be assembled at its new facilities, but these will likely be the models with the greatest sales potential, including Dolphin, Signal or Atto 3.

Spain was a candidate country for the creation of a BYD car plant

Before choosing Hungary, BYD studied various locations for its electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Europe. Among others are Spain, Germany, Poland and France.

In the case of Spain, BYD analyzed the possibility of a location in Pontevedra, in Galicia, where Stellantis already has a presence and where the Peugeot E-2008 is assembled. Even the company’s leaders met with the political leaders of the autonomous community, seeking the allocation of land with an area of at least a million square meters. One of them was offered on the industrial logistics platform Salvaterra-As Neves. But in the end the negotiations made no progress.
