The month of January was unusually warm and stable in Spain. The beaches of much of the country are filled with people swimming and sunbathing, creating a very unwinter atmosphere. Logically, this has created fear about what will happen in the coming months due to changing of the climate. The same question has been repeated word-of-mouth for weeks: If we are like this in January, what will happen in August? Well, that’s something we can’t know yet. On the other hand, for the month that has just begun there is already predictions and it seems that at least the weather in February will be more or less consistent with this time of year.

This very summery end of January was due to anticyclone which reigned over a large part of the country. That is, an area of high pressure has formed, associated with masses of heavy air tending to descend and spread over the surface of the Earth. As a result, although there was heavy fog in some parts of the country, the weather was otherwise very unwintry. Sun, high temperatures and almost complete absence of precipitation.

On the other side, weather in February, at least in the first few days, will be completely different. As stated from timethe anticyclone will still be with us for a few days, but then it will give way to a couple of fronts that turn to the situationbringing rain, snow and temperatures more typical for this time of year.

The weather in February brings winter back to us

On Wednesday, February 7, the anticycle will be removedp, giving way to the formation of the first clouds of this February weather change. We have already seen that anticyclones are associated with masses of heavy air that descend, preventing the formation of clouds. But as soon as he leaves, they begin to appear.

And Thursday will come Atlantic front. That is, from the ocean of the same name, an air mass formed by winds with different characteristics that collide with each other will fall onto the peninsula. This collision causes much more unstable weather, so that the resulting clouds will begin to dump very heavy precipitation. It will happen especially in the west and center of the peninsula although the drop in temperature will be much more widespread across the country. Areas most affected by rainfall will be Galicia, Central System and western Andalusia.

Second front

On Friday, this front will already be weakening, but another, much more active one will enter the same area. Initially, precipitation will also fall in the west and center of the peninsula, but this time it is expected to quickly cross the peninsula. He will already be somewhat weaker, but Rainfall may remain in the Mediterranean.

It should be noted that all this prediction, voiced State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) Last Friday. Forecasting methods are more accurate for fewer days, but for now the idea remains that the weather in February will be very different from what the first month of the year gave us.

Even if it means giving up the beaches, that’s good news. And everyone loves to walk on the sand, take a bath or sunbathe, but we can’t deny that 2023 was a year of worrying records, and 2024 could be even worse. Climate change has begun to show its harshest side, and the fact that February looks like February is still great news.
