Do you abuse the left lane when driving? Be very careful, the new rules of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), which may come into force in 2025, may result in a large fine. Some actions commonly used by drivers and this may pose a risk to road safety.

In particular, the DGT plans to amend paragraph 31 of the General Traffic Regulations in order to Strictly prohibit overtaking in the left lane when weather conditions are unfavorable. Or in other words, when there is snow or ice on the road and it can make driving difficult.

The purpose of the DDGT is to ensure that drivers leave the left lane clear so that emergency vehicles such as firefighters, ambulances or police can can circulate without problems and without blockages due to adverse weather conditions. In fact, often when it snows or when the road is covered in ice due to the cold, there are long queues due to an accident, a collapsed ramp, etc.

At the moment it is unknown what exactly sanction imposed by the DGT to all those who do not comply with this rule. Well, it hasn’t been made official yet.

Other changes that DGT will bring to the roads

The new modification of the General Traffic Regulations DGT also prescribes new way to give way when an ambulance has to give way, even if the weather conditions are favorable. It is detailed that drivers should move laterally, that is, those in the right lane to the right, and those in the left lane to the left, and leave the central passage supporting the movement of ambulances, firefighters or other emergency vehicles .

Finally, the DGT will also allow motorcycles drive along the side of the road only and exclusively when there is a traffic jam. In this case, they can travel at a speed of no more than 30 km/h and respect the priority of other vehicles suitable for riding on the side of the road, such as bicycles.

Ambulances, fire engines or police may also use the roadside if they use their lights and sounds.
