Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) added two cheeses to a list published last August that cited multiple batches of the dairy product as being contaminated with bacteria. Salmonella enteritidis. This warning was transmitted to AESAN by the Catalan food control authorities, since these cheeses are produced in the said Autonomous Community. However, they are exported to the rest of the country, so the situation with them contaminated cheeses it has already become known to others autonomous officials.
Some of these contaminated cheeses may have already been on the market. So consumers were not only ordered out of supermarkets, but also warned not to eat them if they had them at home. If I did this, then it is worth paying attention to the possible appearance symptoms of salmonellosis.
They usually appear from 6 to 72 hours after eating said food. Therefore, those who ate contaminated cheeses more than 3 days ago should not, in principle, be afraid of infection. Unless it’s asymptomatic, of course. So which cheeses are susceptible to this disease and how can we spot the symptoms?

What are the symptoms?
Typical symptoms of salmonellosis are fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, myalgia, etc.. They usually last from 2 to 7 days and are usually resolved without problems. However, in children and older adults, dehydration can be dangerous if left unchecked.
On the other hand, people with weakened immune systems, and sometimes pregnant women, may experience complications such as meningitis, encephalopathy, endocarditis, pneumonia, abscesses, osteomyelitis, cellulitis or arthritis. Therefore, this sector of the population should be especially careful with such warnings about contaminated cheeses. Fortunately, complications occur in only 5% of cases. But they can be deadly, so it’s important to keep an eye out for them.

And it’s not just the contaminated cheeses that AESAN warns you should be careful about. Also with other products such as vegetables and herbs exposure to contaminated or poorly treated irrigation water, raw eggs or meat. Fresh, unpasteurized foods such as dairy products or gazpacho can also harbor bacteria of the genus Salmonella.
It is important to wash vegetables, follow package directions for foods such as bagged salads or gazpacho, and cook meats and eggs well. All this helps prevent risk. In the meantime, if you have contaminated cheese, don’t eat it.
