They have become very fashionable in recent years. lifting tables. There are more and more people who work while sittingbe it in the office or through remote work. It is well known that sitting for long periods of time can cause many health problems. Therefore, this new desktop option created a sensation. You can use it as a regular table; but, from time to time, you can lift it to work while standing for a while. These are all benefits. Or so it seems; Well, according to a study recently conducted by Australian scientists, this concept is not as wonderful as it seems.
To conduct the study, they had data from 83,013 peopleextracted from UK Biobank. This is a database that includes a lot of information about both health parameters and survey responses from a large number of people.
In this regard, survey data about their daily habits. How long did they spend sitting? And is it worth it? Did they spend a lot of time on the road? Did they sleep well? All this information, when compared with the medical history of these people over 7 years, provided an interesting answer to the question that these scientists asked themselves. And the response to the use of lift tables, unfortunately for their manufacturers, has not been very optimistic.
Stand or sit? That’s the question
A sedentary lifestyle is known to affect our health on many levels, both in relation to cardiovascular health as with development metabolic diseaseslike type 2 diabetes. But are we talking about a sedentary lifestyle while standing or sitting?
Research supporting the use of lift tables indicates these harmful effects only when we I’m standing on a chair. However, these scientists did not see this. They found that, interestingly, spending a lot of time on your feet did not increase or decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. There seemed to be no influence. Yes, there was a great connection with development circulatory diseases. But this connection was also observed in people who spent a lot of time standing.
In particular, standing for more than 2 hours a day increases the risk of developing circulation problems. 11% for every additional half hour. For those who work in a sitting position, spending a total of 10 hours a day, each additional hour meant an increased risk of circulatory diseases. by 26%.
The differences aren’t that big, so lift tables won’t be much of a benefit.
Are lift tables useful?
The authors of this study believe that the differences between their results and those of other previous studies are due to their focus on different health parameters. Previous studies looked at less drastic findings, such as slight increases in blood pressure. Instead, they focused on much more serious signs, such as hospitalization. This shows that standing on your feet is also not beneficial. It must be taken into account that it was observational study. It is impossible to prove 100% that participants’ circulatory problems were caused by a sedentary lifestyle. However, with over 83,000 participants, the results can be taken quite seriously.

So standing desks can help us with posture and back pain. But when it comes to diseases of the circulatory system, there is not such a big difference here either.
The ideal, ultimately, is movement. Taking breaks to squat or walk around the office, even short ones, can be much more beneficial than working while standing at a desk. And much cheaper too.
