Wi-Fi repeater and mesh networking with FRITZ!Repeater

The solution is to install a Wi-Fi repeater such as the FRITZ!Repeater we will see in this guide. The Wi-Fi repeater connects to the router and amplifies the wireless signal so that it reaches more places with good connection quality.

If you also set up both devices in a mesh network (or Mesh), the router and repeater will work as if they were one access point to easily connect what you want.

How to connect a Wi-Fi repeater to a home router

First of all, it will be correct to connect the Wi-Fi repeater to the mains and correctly connect it to the router. Here are the steps you must follow to achieve this:

First, plug the Wi-Fi extender into an outlet near the router. Then wait about 1 minute until the repeater turns on and the power and WiFi stay lit.

Then press the button Connect/WPS repeater for about 1 s and release again. When you do the latter, you will see the WLAN indicator start flashing.

Keep the button pressed for 2 minutes Unite router until the corresponding LED lights up.

Once one of the signal strength LEDs on the repeater lights up, it means the repeater is properly connected to the router.

You can then turn off the repeater and take it anywhere in your home or office where you need to expand your wireless network coverage.

Plugging it back into the outlet will restore the previously configured connection to the router. On the other hand, please note that you can also set up by connecting the extender to the router with a LAN cable (bridge mode).

Check the quality of your wireless connection

If you are using a router from the FRITZ!Box range with a repeater from the FRITZ!Repeater range, you can check the quality of the wireless connection using the LEDs or the app.

In the case of LEDs, you must first check what color the link strength LED on the repeater is. So if the LED is solid green, the Wi-Fi connection is good; If the LED is solid orange, it means that the Wi-Fi connection is poor. In the latter case, place the repeater elsewhere.

If you choose to use the FRITZ!App WLAN for testing, run it on your mobile device (free for FRITZ devices!). Then click on the button my repeaters from the same FRITZ!App WLAN and continue Assess the position of the router/repeater. The FRITZ!App WLAN then displays the connection quality.

If you are prompted to move the repeater, then return to FRITZ! App WLAN and from there press the refresh symbol to evaluate the connection again.

Mesh Router and Repeater Configuration

If you are using two products that support the Mesh networking standard, such as a FRITZ!Box router and a FRITZ!Repeater, when installed using the above steps, both devices will be automatically linked in Mesh mode. This means that the router and the repeater use the same protocols and passwords, even though they are different access points.

In practice, this means that you can connect to any of them as if it were the same network and browse at maximum speed, quality and minimum latency at home or in the office.

To verify that the Mesh configuration is correct, log into the FRITZ!Box user interface, find the connected devices (router and repeater) and check that the Mesh icon appears next to them. This means they are well tuned.

Otherwise, you will need to set up the device manually. To do this, from the user interface of the FRITZ!Box router, enter the menu The local network and press net mesh.

Next from tab mesh network setupactivate the option FRITZ!Box as mesh base. Finally, to save changes to the configuration, click Apply.

Now you must pair both devices (router and repeater) in Mesh mode, that is, you will need to follow everything described in the section “How to connect a Wi-Fi repeater to a home router”.
