The number of hurricanes decreases in total ocean basins, except one. These are scientists’ latest estimates after countless studies show a drastic decline in ocean hurricanes.

The climate change which affects the whole planet, among the various effects, also includes a reduction of these phenomena. The numbers speak for themselves: over the past century, the number of tropical hurricanes and typhoons has decreased by 13%. This trend applies to all but one of the world’s ocean basins.

The Atlantic basin is the only one where hurricanes and cyclones have increased rather than decreased. This is the result of a study conducted by Hiro Murakami of the Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Hurricanes: what future awaits us?

It should also be borne in mind that a decrease in phenomena does not mean that they are less violent. On the contrary. According to Savin Chand of the Federation University of Australia, in the future I will cyclones, although small, they may turn out to be of greater intensity than before. A phenomenon that is clearly explained by the process of global warming that we witness day after day.

This process has made it difficult for hurricanes to form, but at the same time, the energy from heating increases their violence once they form. However, there is still a lot of uncertainty about the future, as several researchers and scientists of these phenomena have pointed out.

Even past data is often patchy and unreliable, and while the trend is understood, we still don’t have very reliable predictions.
