The study takes it one step further with an important discovery that could lead to targeted and more effective treatments for patients with asthma. Worldwide, 262 million people suffer from this disease. An international research team led by Dr. Stacey Reinke of Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia, made the discovery.

The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, is also in the studio next to him. They found a change in the metabolism of carnitine linked to severe asthma. This biochemical process could be a valid therapy for the treatment of this chronic disease.

In patients with severe asthma, the metabolism of carnitine has a significant shortage. Over there
carnitine is a metabolite synthesized by the human body. The researchers were able to
carnitine concentration in the urine of patients with severe asthma. Compared to people with forms of
mild and moderate asthma that had no such concentration.

Any biochemical changes in the lungs can enter the bloodstream and then be excreted in the urine. In this study, we were able to use the urinary metabolome (the collection of all metabolites in the urine, ed.) to identify fundamental differences in energy metabolism that could be a target for new interventions in the control of asthma.

Stacey Reinke, doctor

The results of the study have captured the essence of carnitine and of metabolism in asthma. The
Scholars confirm that the detected changes do not respond positively to treatment with
oral corticosteroids. The latter are currently used by most asthmatics to
asthma symptoms.
