The announcement by Vincenzo Ugo Santucci of the Directorate-General for Animal Health of the Ministry of Health reads as follows:

After 30 years we finally have a national registry of pets, especially dogs but also cats, in which they will include all the information from the regional databases.

The news reached the press conference “Leaving is a nightmare. In addition to being a crime, “launched by the” Fnovic, the National Federation of the Italian Veterinary Order. With the nationwide registry for dogs and cats, you can bring order and cross the boundaries of regional registry offices that don’t communicate with each other.

In 1991 the introduction of the mandatory microchip for dogs it has become useful for animal identification. With the microchip, the dog is now registered in the local registry, so that the animal can be found more easily in the region in the event of theft, loss or something else. The purpose of the national registration is to allow pets to be found faster outside the Region.

There is currently no national dog registry in Italy. This poses a problem: When a dog with the microchip is found in a region other than its origin, it is difficult to find. The only way is to call on a veterinarian that thanks to colleagues can go back to pet buddy of the dog.

It should be noted that each region has its own dog registry. Furthermore, also that private and public veterinarians only have access to data related to the area to which they belong. So if the dog is not registered in the local registry, the vet will not be able to find the pet buddy, but only there Region of Origin. This also applies to ordinary citizens.

With the national registration there will be another change, that of cats for which the introduction of the registration obligation is foreseen, such as for dogs. The inclusion of the National Registry and mandatory microchip also for cats is part of an animal health reform that is being added to city education.
