Also called the Wagon Wheel or ESO 350-40, the galaxy is oddly shaped. At its center is a smaller ring surrounded by a much larger ring, 150,000 light-years wide.
This figure is the result of a high-speed collision with another galaxy that occurred about 200 million years ago. The event profoundly changed the position of stars around the Cartwheel’s central black hole.
The photos provide information to scientists interested in investigating the origins of this unusual star cluster. For example, it is possible to see the bright core, which shows the region of formation of the youngest stars in the system.
The Hubble telescope had imaged the Cartwheel before, but visualization of the image was hampered by the amount of gas found around the star cluster. It was possible to see this obstacle thanks to Webb’s powerful infrared cameras.
