On Wednesday, June 27, Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman unveiled the first details of his ambitious urban mega-project called “The Line,” a uniquely built city in the desert. It will stretch 170 kilometersconnecting the west coast of the country to the east.
The futuristic city, which will be built in the northwest of the country, near the Red Sea, is part of the region. new project, An initiative that spans three countries and started in 2019. According to the press release, The Line is a “civilization revolution that puts people first, providing an unprecedented urban environment while preserving the surrounding nature.”
How will The Line city work?
By putting people first in the urban planning hierarchy, The Line eliminates the need for routes to public transport and buses. Movements within the city are carried out by a high-speed underground train line. take the passenger from one end of the city to the other in just 20 minutes.
However, the urban mobility proposal foresees that all needs can be met within a few minutes of walking. Without cars, there would be no emissions of any kind.. The energy to power the city will be 100% renewable and will be primarily geared towards people’s health and well-being, rather than transportation and infrastructure as in most cities.
To protect the surrounding nature, the project will protect 95% of the land, which is home to 9 million inhabitants, in an area of 34 km2.
