It is an international collaboration of the London Institute of Medical Sciences of the Medical Research Council (MRc). Participants 27 labs and more than 50 researchers. The protagonistfish genetic atlas most complete existing. Geneticists have been studying it for decades. The zebrafish used to identify the characteristics of different human diseases. In the atlas, there are 140 thousand regions of DNA thanks to 1,802 samples, essential for studying various tumors or other types of neurodegenerative disorders or diseases. The zebrafish is the second most widely used animal model at the biomedical and scientific level.

Cataloging genetic information for zebrafish is a major breakthrough that could support some of the more exciting advances in medicine and life sciences in the coming years.

Ferenc Mueller, an expert at the British University of Birmingham and one of the authors of the study

The zebrafish lends itself well to its task because its embryos are transparent and have special regenerative properties. The new genetic atlas has DNA sequences related to different stages of the evolution of these animals. Still, according to the study’s signatories, this makes the goal of a catalog of whole DNA superimposed on that of humans even more accessible. Everything for facilitating new and further medicines more effective treatments.

This large study brings all the data together in a single framework, enabling researchers around the world to address problems that individual studies cannot address.

Carsten Daub, expert from the Swedish Karolinska Institute and author of the study
