Google wants to improve its AI to highlight more reliable search results

Google has started working on changing their featured snippets to make answers more accurate or give answers that don’t make any sense.

To contextualize what these snippets are, sometimes in Google search results we see how they look certain. fragments with information at the top.

These selected snippets, according to the search engine, “displayed when our systems determine that this format will help users find what they are looking for more easily by being able to read the page description and click a link to access it. They are especially useful for mobile users or those who perform voice searches” .

They come from web results. When a specific request is made, Google’s automated systems determine whether a page can be useful as a featured snippet.


In a presentation to journalists, Google gave several examples of these problems and how to fix them. For example, While studying how long it takes for light to travel from the Sun to Earth, Google at one point came up with a snippet emphasizing the distance to Pluto.

Knowing this, its usefulness is reduced to zero, apart from the fact that it can create some other problem due to false information. The solution, according to Pandu Nayak, vice president of search, is to find consensus: matching facts in the top search results.

That is, they won’t establish that something is trustworthy just by looking at the first few results, but examine a few pages that Google already trusts, and then try to find common ground.

The same thing happened with false premises which happened in these results, where, for example, if you searched for something as odd as “When did Snoopy kill Abraham Lincoln?”, the snippet’s answer was the exact date of Lincoln’s death.

Google claims to have trained its systems to better detect them rather than suggest them as a featured snippet, and promises that reduced the number of such inappropriate appearances by 40%.

With all this, the company seeks to increase the credibility of this information, although it always warns that the results may be unreliable.
