Today’s great drought brings our rivers and rivers to their knees mussels from the Mediterranean. This has consequences for the environment and the economy (fishermen and restaurants). The CIA – Italian Farmers Association is sounding the alarm about the gradual extinction of Italian mussels. So more and more not available and expensive.
The “white water” kills these molluscs. In addition, the scorching temperatures accelerated the spread of algae. The latter releases toxic substances that whiten the water by removing oxygen. This kills fish and mussels. Fish can also be saved by moving, but mussels cannot.
The record heat has sent the fish trade into crisis. The CIA association estimates that 35% of the shellfish between the Po and the Adriatic have died. It is the ideal habitat for the real mussel that comes from Polesine on Italian tables. All this could lead to an increase in the export of fish products from Greece or Turkey. However, 85% of Italian consumers seem to prefer Italian processing for more serious and loyal checks.
The disadvantages therefore have consequences for the environment and the economy. Here’s a plate of spaghetti allo scoglio, it used to cost 12 euros, now it costs 14 euros. The biggest risk is a 50% reduction in consumption.
There are 1,500 companies with a production of about 95 thousand tons per year (from PescAgri-Cia), who complain about the risk of lost revenue for tens of millions.
