The news of the ban on barrels throughout Italy represented a revolutionary decision for the ancient tradition of carriages drawn by animals. It was Patrizia Prestipino, deputy of the PD, who pushed the government to approve this agenda. Approval falls short in the middle of a hot season like summer 2022. A scorching heat for people, but also for animals. These are often exploited to the extreme and then end up in the slaughterhouse or are used as tiresome transport for tourists.

Animal welfare organizations have long fought for recognition of such modes of transport as: serious animal cruelty. Some earlier results were already being felt, but in August 2022 the government approved an agenda signed by Prestipino. The approved agenda sees the ban on the use of animals as a means of transport in Italy.

The Lega and Fratelli d’Italia opposed the approval. In the end, the order was passed with few votes. Here is the detailed wording of the agenda that commits the government to:

Prohibit the use of animals for the traction of vehicles and vehicles of all kinds used for the square service and for non-regular public services aimed at transporting people for tourist and recreational purposes, throughout the national territory.

It is still:

To provide for administrative sanctions and confiscation of the vehicle and animal in case of unauthorized transport.

What will be the next step for the government? Make the agenda a norm. In addition, it will also be a rule that provides for the reconversion of the company. Those who had a permit can, for example, convert it into a permit for a taxi or electric train. A way to support transportation and end animal cruelty.
