Sea turtles, new rescue center in Manfredonia

An essential first step towards the realization of the new project “Casa del Mare” recovery center in front of sea ​​turtles. More than 1,600 specimens that have been cared for and released into the wild over the past 10 years will be rescued. This is the aim of the Legambiente Tortoise Sanctuary, which in Manfredonia.

There was a small ceremony during the press conference of the project presentation. Local and regional institutions were present, from the Gargano Sailing Center, from the Port Authority of the Southern Adriatic. Many friends of the sea turtles were also present as professional fishermen from the local seafarers.

Truly modern, original, huge and comfortable with advanced technological tools, the new recovery center is truly state of the art. A 360-degree sanctuary for sea turtles. It will be didactic center for schools, the local community and tourism. There are numerous initiatives to discover the beautiful world of sea turtles, the environment and marine ecosystems.

The opening event of the new center continued with the release at sea of ​​the Life turtle. A poor grown woman dragged herself along. At first he showed some diving problems which he solved almost immediately afterwards. Life was the first turtle to swim in the tanks of the new sanctuary. It will resume the sea, but always under the control of the eyes of the center.

The new “hospital” is in collaboration with the Biology Department of the University of Pisa. The monitoring will take place thanks to the satellite channel: supplied, to track his movements in real time. A way to learn more about the habits and needs of these beautiful sea creatures.
