This is a school week. We have it for all platforms (Google, Microsoft…) and for all kinds of activities. We learned how to use the translator through Google Sheets (known as Google Spreadsheets), and a few days ago we learned how to write vertically.
And while Excel offers many features and functions for working with time, you may want the time to be divided by decimals. You may need them for use in other formulas, for timesheets, or just for preference.
And although there are several ways to convert time to decimals in Excel, and you can use the method that is most comfortable for you or that works best for you, today we are going to show you one of them.
Using time and decimal formats
- Before converting times and decimals in a spreadsheet, make sure the cells are formatted appropriately.
- For time, you can do this by selecting a cell and selecting “Time” from the “Number” dropdown on the Home tab.
- If you plan to convert hours, minutes and seconds, you’d better use the “Format Cells” feature. Select a cell or range, right click and choose Format Cells.
- Select the “Number” tab and select “Time” on the left. Then select the hours:minutes:seconds option on the right as shown below and click OK.
- For decimals, also format result cells as numbers using the Format Cells feature. Right-click the cell(s) and select Format Cells.
- Select the “Number” tab and select “Number” on the left. Set the number of decimal places to 2 on the right and click OK.
- If you end up with an integer as a result, you can use the “Increase” and “Decrease Decimal” buttons in the Number section of the Home tab to customize the look. This allows 624.00 to be displayed as 624.
With all of that, you are ready to start converting cells from hours to decimals for tally in Excel.
