Researchers have discovered a group of young stars spiraling toward the center of a cluster. galaxy close to ours. According to experts, this move answers questions that astronomy has yet to answer.
The discovery was made using data collected over 11 years by the Hubble Space Telescope. It was also confirmed by scientists working on the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope.
During this time, Hubble kept an eye on the Small Magellanic Cloud conglomerate NGC 346. He gathered enough information for astronomer Elena Sabbi to measure every change in the position of these stars.
The researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute in the United States found that these stars are moving at an average speed of 3,200 kilometers per hour – in 11 years, that’s twice the distance between the Earth and the Sun.
Because of the distance, the discovery was only possible thanks to the long observation time and powerful equipment on the Hubble. But another group of scientists here on Earth also doubted the importance of NGC 346.
Peter Zeidler, an astronomer at the European Space Agency, used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope to measure the radial velocities of some stars in this region. This lets it know which objects are approaching or moving away from us.
However, the equipment allows you to look beyond the stars: it also reveals the motion of space gas and dust, and to the surprise of scientists, this material was also entering the conglomerate.
But deep down, the surprise made sense to experts. The spiral is a natural way to ignite the formation of new suns, they say. But more importantly, another clue to the beginning of the universe has emerged.
This is because the stars are the true stars of the universe. Identifying the laws of physics governing its origin is also revealing an important chapter in the history of all that exists.
