This time theEuropean Union it will not be limited to a mere statement of intent. MEPs consider introducing a sanction mechanism for all Member States that do not meet the objectives of the Suitable for package 55:.
The EU Commission has proposed installing at least one by 2026 charging station for electric cars every 60 km. Only outermost regions with bad roads would be excluded. The European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism has already approved a draft of the regulation, which must then be discussed and possibly amended by the Commission and the Council.
There is an important precedent that could convince the European legislator to use an iron fist. In the past, the EU had set a target for Member States to install at least 677,000 charging stations for cars and trucks by 2020. Moral? In the end, only 377,000 were installed. Some countries have respected the initiative to the letter, while others have been less zealous.
To prevent the situation from happening again this time, some MEPs would urge to foresee something sanctions for non-compliant Member States. MEP Ismail Ertug, who more than anyone else is pushing a hard line, proposes the following mechanism: €1,000 fine for each charging station less than the targets set by the European Union. In a major nation’s economy, this wouldn’t be a particularly violent sting: the absence of 1,000 columns would result in a $1 million fine. That is probably less than what states spend annually on office supplies from their national parliaments.
