Japanese researchers have invented a new device that can enhance the salty taste of food. By replacing chopsticks, the traditional chopsticks used as cutlery in eastern cultures, it was possible to stimulate the flavors of food with electrical stimuli.

The new equipment consists of a bracelet that can generate an electric current that passes from the sticks to the food and stimulates sodium ions responsible for increasing the salty taste sensation in the mouth by up to 1.5 times.

The idea is that the new chopsticks could reduce salt consumption, especially in Japan, where the kitchen prefers salty dishes. It is estimated that an adult Japanese consumes twice the amount recommended by the World Health Organization per day.

Excessive consumption of this spice is a public health concern as it can lead to high blood pressure, stroke, and other diseases. However, it is difficult to encourage food re-education of the population, as its taste is particularly pleasing to the human palate.

Technology, Meiji University professor Homei Miyashita and beverage maker Kirin Holdings Co. developed jointly between The researcher is an expert in exploring human sensory experiences through technology.

His group also developed a TV screen last year that can mimic the flavors of food. Miyashita is developing prototype sticks that have been released. The goal is to sell them as early as next year.
