The probe CAPSTONE (Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment), sent to the MoonSeptember 8 had started with run on its own get out of hand because of a problem.

The probe is a small cubes measures 20x20x30 centimeters and was sent on June 28, 2022 to be placed in a near-polar orbit around the moon. The aim is to verify the firmness of the track where the Maanpoort cislunar stationprovided by the program Artemis of the NASA.

On September 8, the spacecraft began to spin uncontrollably on its own. Based on the data received from the aircraft, it was possible to identify the problem at once valve from one of the eight thrusters which was partially open.

So the engineers ran a series tests and simulations to make a plan to block the rotation of the plane. Once this was done, the commands were sent to the probe, which was able to perform the maneuver and regain control of its attitude, blocking rotation.

CAPSTONE then deploys its own antennas to Earth, connect to NASA centers and orient yours solar panels All that’s left is to check to see if what happened caused any problems with the spacecraft’s instruments.

For now, the technicians will continue to investigate the problem to avoid the same type of failure as the probe moves closer to theorbit around the moon where it will collect information about the environment and its health status for six months.
