An epidemic of one of the deadliest diseases known – Ebola – Registered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Saturday 23. This is the third epidemic in the African country in the last five years.

The new record of the disease began with a case recorded in the city of Mbandaka, Equateur province, on the banks of the Congo River. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a 31-year-old man began showing symptoms consistent with Ebola on April 5 and went to the hospital after a week of home treatment. He died last Thursday (21) in an Ebola intensive care center.

From that moment on, anyone who came into contact with him began to be watched.

Ebola: transmission and immunization

The Ebola virus, which affects humans and other primates such as monkeys, gorillas and chimpanzees, was first detected in 1976 near Zaire, the former name of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Although the natural host of the virus is still unknown, experts at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believe that the microorganism is carried by animals and that the hosts are bats.

The main symptoms of zoonosis are: fever, very strong headache, muscle weakness, sore throat and joints, and chills. Mortality rates in previous outbreaks ranged from 25% to 90%.. Fortunately, an effective treatment is now available that can benefit patients in the early stages of the disease.

In the next few days, a vaccination campaign should be initiated using existing rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine stocks in that country.
