Tomorrow theapp IO will be able to keep one scanned version of documents personal: the driver’s license, the health card and also the electoral card. The project has already been started by the Digital Transformation department.
Now the baton has passed Vittorio Colao, former Minister for Technological Innovation, to the new government. The department has already made a working prototype of the digital driving licence. The IO app, which Italians already use to communicate with the PA and which they used to keep the green pass, will soon become a wallet that can host digital documents with legal value.
It could be a matter of a few months, maybe 6 or 9. Then the IO app can be used for documents like the licensethe electoral card and the Health insurance card (but at the moment there is no question of the identity card). It should be noted that the project is an initiative of the outgoing government and the new executive must make sure to come in and fully function.
The project is part of the recommendations that Minister Colao has left to his successor, whose identity we do not yet know. «To start experimenting with the driver’s license prototype of the Wallet IO and define changes to the regulatory framework that allow them to be placed next to the laminated document,” reads the list of priorities indicated by the minister. The IO app is already used by 6 million users every month.
In addition, the digitization of the electoral card would open the doors to very interesting hypotheses (but not without major risks), such as the possibility of allowing some form of electronic voting. We are already seeing the first steps in this direction with the possibility of signing the proposals for a lifting of the referendum through the SPID.
