During Lenovo Tech World, the company showcased some interesting products. But perhaps most interesting of all was his demonstration of a foldable smartphone from Motorola. Yes, we are not crazy, remember that Lenovo bought Motorola a few years ago.
Of course, the company emphasizes that flexible display technology is still in its early conceptual stages, but it’s nice to see some progress in this type of device. And, fortunately for the market, No it’s not Samsung responsible for this technological progress.
Concept a product developed by Motorola’s internal innovation group called 312 Labs. Although the group focuses on a wide range of different technologies, its goal is to try to solve customer problems with innovative experiences.
According to Motorola, flexible OLED technology can provide “optimal balance of content and comfort“. The new phone concept offers three modes: extended, compact and preview.
The possibilities of flexible screens and the challenges of a foldable smartphone
In its most compact form, the new device concept can measure up to four inches, and in its extended form it can reach 6.5 inches.
While something like this would normally be overwhelming, we’ve already seen technology like this used in a nearly production-ready device, the canceled LG Rollable phone. Unfortunately, the device was never presented to the general public.
We saw the phone in action last month and it was pretty interesting.. While the general idea remains the same, the two companies have approached it differently as Lenovo decided to implement a screen that slides out vertically.
This makes it a very handy phone that can have a great screen thanks to its rollable OLED technology. In addition, the concept device can be deployed and retracted at the touch of a physical button. Of course, this technology has great potential.
Unfortunately, Lenovo didn’t share when folding smartphone. Since this is a concept, it might be a long way off and for now we’ll have to settle for foldable smartphones, which aren’t bad either.
