YouTube withdraws – for the time being -: 4K resolution will not become an exclusive benefit for subscribers YouTube PremiumGoogle has completed the test phase and for now everything remains as before.
At the beginning of the month YouTube had conducted some sample tests among users, which restricted the playback of 4K resolution videos only to paying users. Needless to say, the initiative – albeit temporary – has caused more than a few tummy upsets. After all, how could it be otherwise? YouTube has always allowed anyone to play 4K videowithout asking for anything in return.
It’s one thing to announce new features designed exclusively for subscribers, it’s another to ‘snatch’ regular users of an existing and free feature to reserve it exclusively for those who pay.
Meanwhile, YouTube also deleted tweets announcing the start of the trial. Another proof that, at least for now, the site executives are planning to put a rock on it. 4K videos remain free.
It must be said that the tests involved a very small percentage of users. YouTube had explained early on that no final decision had been made. The fact remains that YouTube’s latest quarterly earnings have been disappointing and the platform is desperately looking for new ways to increase revenue. Increasing the number of subscribers to YouTube Premium remains a priority.
