Amazon filed a complaint with the authorities against an Italian real estate agent who sells fake review packs. It is the first criminal complaint of this type filed by the e-commerce giant.
“To bring these criminals to justice,” said Dharmesh Mehta, VP of Selling Partner Services at Amazon, through legal action and criminal complaints is one of many important initiatives that help us protect customers so they can shop in peace.
“As well as continuing to innovate our systems for detecting and preventing false reviews in our store, Amazon will relentlessly identify the culprits feeding this market and take action against them. There is no place for the fake reviews on Amazon or elsewhere in the industry”.
Over there complaint presented in Italy is part of a wider multi-year operation by Amazon to fight counterfeiting, fake reviews and any other illicit tool used to illegally climb the rankings within the internal e-commerce search engine. Two years ago, the giant had wiped out several popular Chinese electronics brands, all guilty of using some tricks to fake reviews of their products. At the same time, Amazon has more than 10 running lawsuits against as many companies and individuals accused of selling fake review packages in the United States.
It is estimated that there is a network of more than 11,000 sites, social groups and Telegram channels dedicated to buying and selling fake reviews. These tricks are used by retailers to climb Amazon’s internal rankings, reaching more customers with often poor quality products, causing unimaginable damage to both Amazon’s reputation and consumers.
