Currently, Apple Pay is the only service that is allowed to use the iPhone’s NFC interface to make payments. According to the Financial Times, the European Commission is considering this unfair competition. For example, the EU is reportedly planning to sue the American manufacturer within the next week.

The problem lies in the closed nature of the NFC system in Apple’s smartphones. This prevents users from choosing other payment options like PayPal, Venmo or regular banks. The company claims that this restriction was introduced to ensure the privacy and security of its customers.

This is the second time a dispute is being discussed between Apple and the EU this week. A few days ago, we reported a new addition to the European Digital Markets Act, which criticizes Apple’s restrictions on iOS web browsers.
