They say the future electric car, if the oil lobby and related industries allow it. But many believe that the real alternative should be hydrogen car. How does this differ from petrol car?
Hydrogen is one of the most abundant materials in nature. We find it in water and air, it is inexhaustible. So it’s relatively cheap to getalthough its transportation and storage costs a lot of money.
Another advantage of a hydrogen car is that it does not pollute the environment. displaces water vaporso it cleans up the environment.
Differences between a hydrogen car and a gasoline car
Our colleague Mario Erraes from Auto Bild explored the most significant differences between both vehicle types.
The first and most important, obviously, is combustion. Like gasoline cars, and unlike electric cars, hydrogen cars they also perform “combustion”, although it is very different from gasoline.
these cars generate electricity by collecting oxygen from the air and mixing it with hydrogen from a reservoir. This electricity drives the engine. Water vapor is released through the exhaust pipe, so they do not pollute and also purify the air.
Another difference lies in hydrogen depot. It cannot be stored at room temperature like gasoline: it requires very high pressure D very low temperatures.
In addition, hydrogen is very bulky, so need very large deposits offer a range similar to a petrol car. That’s why hydrogen cars usually have smaller trunks.
These deposits have useful life 15 years. After this time, they must be replaced in accordance with regulations to prevent leakage.
refueling This is very similar to gasoline cars, and takes the same amount of time. In this they are superior to electric ones. However, as we have seen, its storage is expensive, requiring high pressure and very low temperatures. That’s why there are very few hydrogen plants in Spain. This is still its big drawback: there are very few places for refueling, and you can’t do it at home, like on an electric car.
as we see there differences important techniques between hydrogen car and petrol carbut when it comes to their use, both for refueling and maintenance, they are very similar.
