Chinese manufacturer CATL has announced the mass production of a new high energy density battery that promises to revolutionize the automotive and energy storage industry. Qilin uses third-generation call-to-pack (CTP) technology to deliver an energy density of 255 Wh/kg, higher than Tesla’s cylindrical cell.
According to the company, the battery provides 13% more energy than the 4680 battery, which was considered the most advanced for electric cars up to that time. This provides greater range, longer life, safety, faster charging and greater efficiency and low temperature performance with the same size and chemical system.
Cars equipped with Qilin will have a range of 1,000 km on a single charge. The product will make its debut in the Zeekr 009, a luxury minivan manufactured by Chinese Geely. The battery can be used in other models. CATL has partnerships with well-known automakers in the Brazilian market, such as Honda and Mercedes-Benz.
Inside the Qilin Battery
Qilin has a revolutionary water cooling design that increases the heat exchange area by four times and halves the heat control time. As a result, the battery can support a 5-minute warm-start for lithium-ion equipped batteries and a 10% to 80% fast-charge in 10 minutes.
CATL reinvented the system, using precision computing capabilities and artificial intelligence simulation to explore the limits of battery design. Intelligent arrangement of various components such as structural protection, high-voltage connection and venting with heat dissipation increase battery capacity by 6 percent.
The product has the integration of functions, with a multifunctional elastic middle layer that combines the inner plate, the liquid cooling plate and the thermal pad, improves the reliability and resistance of the battery during its lifetime, increases the resistance of the battery to shocks and vibrations.
CATL Profile
CATL is the market leader in electric vehicle batteries, with a share of approximately 25% more than the second-place LG Energy Solution. The company was founded 25 years ago in China and has already established subsidiaries in Germany, France, the United States, Canada and Japan.
The main strategies of the manufacturer are the development of renewable energy generation and storage to replace fossil fuels, as well as intelligently integrating market electrification practices. For this purpose, it acts to innovate in materials, structures and business models in the sector.
