In Brazil, the deforestation of the Amazon wiped out 904 Km2 vegetation in October. The official data released a few days ago and collected by theNational Institute for Space Research (Inpe) by the Scare off satellite system showed a 3% increase in deforested area.

In just 10 months, 9494 km have been cancelled2 of vegetation beating the record of all of 2021 by 9178 km2. As stated by the Brazilian chapter of the WWFdeforestation and fires exploded after the results of the presidential election leading to the victory of Luiz Inacio Lula by Silviawho has always been engaged in the fight against this phenomenon.

Under Bolsonaro’s presidency, average annual deforestation has increased by 75% compared to the previous decade and according to André Freitas of Green Peacewill the former president’s environmental policy continue to wreak havoc for some time to come and it will be a great challenge to change the situation.

The new government will have to do a lot of work to get the country back on track, to end the perception that the Amazon is a country without laws.
