Even before the gaming brand Razer became what it is today, Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff released the first gaming mouse. It is now known that Razer’s pioneer and co-founder passed away at the age of 81 last week.
In 1999, Razer released the first gaming mouse with the Boomslang invented by Krakoff. This was an ergonomic, wired PC mouse that sold for around $70 and was primarily intended to appeal to gamers. The pointing device had large mouse buttons and a mouse wheel that served as a third button. While the four buttons can be individually assigned via PC software, the 2,000 dpi sampling rate was supposed to ensure Boomslang had a higher accuracy than many other mice at the time.
It wasn’t until 2005 that Razer was not an independent company, just a brand of Kärna, which also launched an optical PC mouse with a 2,000 dpi sensor. However, Kärna went bankrupt in 2001, after which Krakoff co-founded Razer with Razer CEO Mi-Liang Tan. Razerguy became a starting point for listening to fans and was keen to market a mouse designed specifically for lefties. At that time, the management refused to design such a product, but by the way, the company also has left-handed mice in its range.
After his stint at Razer, Krakoff remained active and founded Mind FX Science, an energy drink brand. Also, his wife, Dr. Patsi Krakoff is a blog with health tips for seniors. Razerguy has also written books under the RM Krakoff name, including Die Laughing: A Novel.
