Samsung has announced the latest storage technology for smartphones, cars and AR/VR with Universal Flash Storage 4.0. The South Korean manufacturer’s first ufs 4.0 products should offer speeds of 23.2 Gbps per lane, which is double that of ufs 3.1.

Thanks to the combination of Samsung’s seventh generation v-nand and its proprietary controller, this storage claims sequential read speeds of 4,200 megabytes per second followed by 2,800 MB/s at sequential writes. This is 2x and 1.6x faster than before, respectively.

The company also claims significant improvements in efficiency. Samsung’s ufs 4.0 offers sequential read speeds of up to 6 MB/s per milliamp, a 46% improvement over the ufs 3.1. There is also the enhanced Replay Protected Memory Block (RPMB) feature, which should be 1.8x more efficient at storing important personal data and can only be accessed via authenticated access.

The largest ufs 4.0 modules measure 11 x 13 x 1 millimeters and have a capacity of 1 TB. Mass production will start in the third quarter of this year, smartphones that will use this technology are not yet clear.
