The founder of the company admitted that missing the opportunity to replace Android in the race in the mobile operating system market was a significant defeat.
Gates emphasized that the mobile operating system market is a “winner-take-all” competition.
He said Microsoft needed to fill this gap: “For us it was natural, but I made mistakes in management and Microsoft didn’t become what Android was.”
Windows Phone 7 didn’t arrive until October 2010, more than two years after the iPhone was released and a year after the first Android smartphone was released.
By then, Android and Apple already shared 99.9% of the market, leaving competitors almost no chance.
Gates acknowledged that the mistake left Microsoft “one of the leading companies” in a situation where success in the mobile market could have made it the undisputed industry leader.
