SpiN-Tec, the first vaccine against covid-19 with completely national technology, Human testing began on Friday morning (25), by the institution responsible for its development: Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). The vaccine was developed at the University’s Vaccine Technology Center (CTVAcinas) in Minas Gerais.
Research for the manufacture of the vaccine began in November 2020 through a partnership with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Minas Gerais (Fiocruz Minas) and received an investment of approximately R$16 million from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). Via RedeVírus, Finep and CNPq.
How does the UFMG SpiN-Tec vaccine work?
The expected difference from SpiN-Tec is that it can function as a “pancoronavirus”, meaning that the vaccine is able to protect the organism against all variants of the disease, including omycron and its subvariants. To achieve this outcome, project coordinator Ricardo Gazzinelli explains in a note: “We included vaccination. a protein that does not vary from variant to variant🇧🇷
The antigen, a substance in the vaccine that stimulates antibody production, has two SARS-CoV-2 proteins in the new vaccine: spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N)The initials that make up the name SpiN.
While existing vaccines against Covid-19 elicit neutralizing antibody responses, “The SpiN-Tec MCTI UFMG has been developed. to induce a T-lymphocyte response, that is, it creates a response not only against one part of the virus molecule, but against several parts of it, as in current vaccines,” explains Professor Gazzinelli.
