On Wednesday 4th, French manufacturer Unistellar unveiled a new version of its smart telescope that is revolutionizing citizen astronomy at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, USA. The new version, called the eVscope eQuinox 2, will sell for US$2,499 (R$13.4k).Billed as “more affordable” in a lineup that also includes the powerful Unistellar eVscope 2.

The two models are an upgrade of the first eVscope (eV stands for “enhanced vision”), combining the traditional idea of a GoTo telescope with cutting-edge technologies that allow software to automatically point at celestial objects. This means combining computer control with image amplification techniques.

To use this type of observatory, turn on the device, select the object to be observed and get started. No manual alignment is required as the telescope captures even weak light from distant galaxies and nebulae, records it on a hypersensitive sensor and projects it onto an OLED screen. Besides, the captured image can be transferred to a smartphone or tablet.

What is the difference between the eQuinox 2 and the eVscope 2?

The biggest difference between the eQuinox 2 and the eVscope 2 and most telescopes on the market is that besides the previous one being $2,400 cheaper, no eyepiece. It is more like an astrophotography device than a professional telescope. But it brings a 4.5″/114mm reflector telescope with a 450mm focal length, f/4 focal ratio and 50x magnification.

Like a miniature mountain peak optical telescope, the eQuinox 2 features a Sony CMOS image sensor that uses intelligent image processing from Unistellar’s “Enhanced Vision” technology. The company promises that even distant planets will soon be tracked. Thanks to a partnership with NASA.

The telescope weighs 9kg in a motorized Alt-Azimuth mount, has an 11-hour rechargeable battery and 64GB of storage. In it, machine learning is not limited to calibrating contrast and color, however, it eliminates the effects of light pollution. This feature allows users to view deep sky objects even in larger cities.
