Apple has announced that the iPod Touch is no longer manufactured at the time of writing. However, the era of Apple portable music players is officially over. Of course, current models of the iPod Touch can be purchased until supplies run out, but no new units will be produced. Over 20 years of iPods, Apple has released dozens of different versions in the Classic, Touch, Mini, Nano and Shuffle series. Only the Touch series was still actively supported.
The iPod Touch was last announced in 2019. This was Apple’s seventh generation touch media player. The first device of the series was launched in 2007 and was followed up with a renewed model every year for years, functionally and aesthetically speaking. The rumor mill was talking about a new iPod Touch a year ago, but it apparently never got to that point.
By the way, the first iPod (later referred to as the Classic) is much older. The first generation of iPod media players was introduced in 2001 and introduced the recognizable round selector wheel. The sixth and final iPod Classic was released in 2007, but there were still some revisions.
The seventh generation iPod Touch (2019) is now the last new iPod officially released.
