Before the rule comes into force, it must be officially approved by the member states of the European Union.

Europe has twelve years old improve and expand the infrastructure and make sure it’s enough to be a continent where all car and van sales are all electric. Based on CO₂ levels recorded in 2021, the standard sets emission reductions of 55% for new passenger cars sold from 2030 and 50% for vans.

Electric mobility is key to ending sales of petrol and diesel vehicles

Vice President of the European Commission and head of the Green Pact, Frans Timmermanns, after approving a measure that will end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2035, explained: “The law strikes the perfect balance between the interests of the industry, climate and workers.” And he explained that the path to zero emissions lies through an electric car: “There must be zero emissions in the exhaust pipe. If the sector can build zero-emission internal combustion engines, then great, let them do it. But now everyone is betting on electrification, because this is the most effective way to achieve it.

He also warned that the automotive industry in China, the United States and India is moving towards electric vehicles very quickly. And he stressed the importance of remaining competitive and not allowing this important economic engine to be handed over to foreigners.

“And if that’s the case, we need to invest in transforming the European automotive industry so that electric vehicles are sold globally, and so we need to redouble our efforts by building charging infrastructure everywhere,” said Frans Timmermans.

He also recalled that in a few years electric vehicles will be cheaper than internal combustion engines. Thereby contributing to the expansion of access to electric mobility and the permanent elimination of the sale of gasoline and diesel cars.
