According to Sony’s most recent quarterly figures, Sony sold significantly fewer PlayStation 5 consoles in the last quarter of 2021 than in the quarter when it was released the previous year. 2 million consoles were sold worldwide in the holiday quarter of 2021, compared to 3.3 million in the same quarter of 2020. According to the Japanese tech giant, this has little to do with the console’s popularity with consumers.

The company admits that very little PlayStation 5 has been produced in recent months. Although the swarf shortage is no longer as bad as in 2020 and early 2021, the shortcomings still affect the production chain. It got so bad that the company started making an extra million PlayStation 4 consoles as compensation.

Sony has sold a total of 19.3 million PlayStation 5 units since the console’s launch in November 2020. That’s roughly 3 million fewer than the PlayStation 4 at the same time in the console’s lifecycle.

It’s not all bad news for the PlayStation manufacturer, though. As many as 70.5 million games were sold in the fourth quarter of 2021 for the PlayStation 4 and 5, compared to 61.4 million units in the same quarter of the previous year. Sony also expects much better results for the upcoming period; Things are looking pretty good for Sony due to tweaks to their production chains, increased yields and the upcoming Plus subscription system (which will no doubt be successful).
