On February 9, NASA signed a contract with Blue Origin, the spaceflight service provider (founder of Amazon) to billionaire Jeff Bezos. equipment for transportation to the magnetosphere of the planet Mars, As part of the Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers or ESCAPADE scientific mission.

pleasure 2024 time window, ESCAPADE will board the company’s New Glenn rocket from Kent in the USA. It is scheduled to launch from Space Launch Complex-36 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida late next year.

The assignment is part of the US aviation agency’s launch services contract, called Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare, VADR, which includes Blue Origin plus twelve other companies selected last year. Indefinite delivery and quantity documents are valid for a five-year order period, and maximum total value of US$300 million (R$1.55 billion).

What will the ESCAPADE mission do on Mars?

Carried by Blue Origin’s New Glenn, ESCAPADE’s instruments will study Mars’ magnetosphere, eg. magnetized space field around the red planet. Considered “class D”, the mission will use two small identical spacecraft that will make simultaneous observations from two different locations.

Each rover will help researchers understand how the Martian magnetosphere responds to the solar wind (the flow of particles from the solar corona) and how energy and plasma enter and exit the planet’s magnetic field. Each satellite will have three instruments: a magnetometer, an electrostatic analyzer to evaluate ions and electrons, and a Langmuir probe to measure plasma density and ultraviolet flux.

The ESCAPADE voyage will take about 11 months to reach Marswhere each spacecraft would spend several months adjusting its best trajectory to collect data from the magnetosphere.
