A team of astrophysicists in Hawaii, USA, discovered the first evidence of a phenomenon predicted by Albert Einstein’s theory of gravity. It is the first observation of an event that establishes the connection between black holes, one of the greatest mysteries in the universe, and dark energy. Combining observation and analysis experiments with the galactic evolution of Einstein’s theory of gravity, the researchers came together to try to understand the contents of black holes. The study was led by scientists at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, but received help from different researchers from nine countries.
In the first study, scientists found that black holes gain an extraordinary amount of mass over billions of years, but they couldn’t explain exactly how this process happens. In the second paper, the growth of the analyzed mass corresponded to predictions of a black hole model that cosmologically produced vacuum energy, a type of energy produced from the compression and compression of matter – without creating singularities and breaking equations. From the two studies, the researchers found that the vacuum energy of black holes produced in the explosions of the first stars was similar to the amount of dark energy observed in our universe. For this reason, scientists believe the new measurements should redefine science’s understanding of what a black hole is.
To conduct the study, the team searched for information on five types of black holes in three types of elliptical galaxies – these galaxies are very large and can be considered fossils of galaxy formation and are likely the result of galaxy collisions. Thus, they found that these black holes were about 7 to 20 times smaller about 9 billion years ago, and likely all black holes are responsible for most of the dark energy in the universe.
