Last Thursday (5th), Fiocruz announced a new species. dengue virus in Brazilcosmopolitan genotype of serotype 2. However, the strain is not new—it is considered the most common genotype worldwide, as the variant is present in Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa.
The Goiás Department of Health confirmed that the new case was detected in the city of Aparecida de Goiânia in February, but the analyzed sample is from a case from the end of November. This is the second time the strain has been found in the Americas, before the cosmopolitan serotype 2 genotype was found in Peru during an outbreak in Madre de Dios province in 2019.
Outbreak in Brazil?
One concern is that the strain will spread to Brazil, beyond the strain that has already spread in the national region. Anyway, it’s important to note that the researchers claimed that the dengue epidemic in Goiás was not genotype related.
“We still don’t know how the cosmopolitan genotype will replicate in Brazil. “Worldwide, it is much more dispersed and causes more cases than the Asian-American genotype that has been circulating in Brazil for years,” said Fiocruz.
An article about the case was published on the medRxiv platform in order to inform the scientific community about the case. To carry out the detection, the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) partnered with the Goiás Central Public Health Laboratory (Lacen-GO).
