There China begins to get (very) fed up with the phenomenon of donations to streamers and content creators. The government agency dealing with the regulation of internet is preparing to act against the phenomenon. The message is clear: the fact that young people are wasting their money donating it to influencers, and that a class of hyper-popular youth is scouring gold is forming, is beginning to cause great concern for the Communist Party of China

The new rules aim to discourage donations from streamers to streamers underage users “The platforms must not develop any features, graphics or other elements that could encourage minors to donate tips and gifts to streamers,” reads the new guidelines from the Cyberspace Administration of China

Companies that violate it risk being forced to suspend donation functions at best, and at worst losing their license to operate in China. The document was also signed by the Central Civilization Agency and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Donations are a “social” problem, the CAC document continues. “We are also afraid that young people will stay up late.” Hence the decision to restrict access to live shows after 10pm.

It is yet another measure taken by China against the misuse of the internet by minors. A year ago, the government issued a series of draconian rules to limit the hours minors spend watching video games.
