The alliance between universities in the United States and the Center for Microscopy at Duke University has succeeded in revolutionizing magnetic resonance imaging exams with a scan 64 million times sharper. Study data was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Widely used to obtain 3D images of the inside of the body, magnetic resonance imaging is an excellent method for diagnosing various diseases such as cancers and diseases that cause damage to the brain.
But this already powerful tool has made millions in terms of image resolution.
The partnership between the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh, Indiana University, and Duke’s Center for In Vivo Microscopy has taken an unprecedented step into the future of imaging.
Resonant machines are currently equipped with magnets capable of producing a magnetic flux in the region of 3 Tesla.
The device used by the team has 9.4 Tesla magnets and coils 100 times larger than those used by conventional equipment.
By scanning mouse brains, the researchers obtained images 64 million times sharper than those produced by standard equipment today.
According to the researchers, this new technology not only validates tumor masses in 3D, but also captures and evaluates the quality of neural networks.
This represents a major advance for the diagnosis and follow-up of neurodegenerative diseases, thanks to the precision of the examination, which can optimize the time required for diagnosis.
The researchers will continue to work and soon people will be able to participate in the research.
