This summer, Europe broke temperature records due to the heat. In some countries, rivers and seas bear the burden. According to the Spanish State Meteorological Agency, May, June and July 2022 were the driest months in the last 57 years.

The most recent case presented concerns the Rhine, one of Europe’s most important river sources. The Rhine flows through many countries, including Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria and Liechtenstein.

Severe drought in recent months has caused the river’s water level to drop.. According to the German media ‘General Anzeiger’, the water dropped seven centimeters last week. Days later, the descent was 36 centimeters in one day.

Severe drought has exposed the so-called ‘hunger stones’. The term used by the Germans refers to ancient rocks carved at other times.

Droughts in Europe have historically brought with them poverty, hunger, lower quality of life and fewer jobs. Some of these stones are marked with years and some with phrases.

On one of the rocks it says “Cry if you see me”. He expresses the messages “He who sees me cried. He who sees me will cry”, “When this stone disappears, life will bloom”.

Others call it “2002” or “2018”, referring to the last few times the river’s flow became visible. There are traces dating back centuries. The oldest have archaic inscriptions and date back to 1417, 1473, 1616, 1630, 1654 and 1666.

What all stones have in common is that they are a reminder of times of extreme drought. In 2018, environmental NGO Greenpeace took one of these rocks and wrote on it, “If you see me, the climate crisis has come.”

Europe is experiencing one of the hottest summers in history. It is already becoming a public health problem in many countries of the continent.

Water reserves have been reduced in Spain, so the country may face a water crisis. The governments of this country and France had to impose restrictions on water consumption.

According to the French meteorological service Météo-France, only 9.7 mm of rain fell in the country in July. March is the driest month on record for them since 1961. For this reason, more than 100 municipalities are without water and 93 more will have to use austerity measures.

The same will be true for regions in Spain in Galicia, Catalonia and Andalusia. Authorities urge caution in consumption, avoid night showers, save money, and not fill swimming pools or wash cars.
