Humanization of pets, especially cats and dogsIt is a common practice and according to experts, it is increasing due to the tendency to prefer a house full of animals. in the case of Spain, where there are more pets than registered children.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, by 2021 there are 6,265,153 children under the age of 14 in the country, while the number of registered pets is 13 million, according to the Spanish Companion Animal Identification Network (REIAC).

And with the presence of pets in the house, family dynamics have been adapted to treat them like children. They sit them at the table to eat, they sleep in bed with them, they take them for a walk in the stroller.among other behaviors.

“Humanization is assigning them behaviors that are basically human behaviors. So, treat them like babies, like children, and we don’t let them go through the processes related to their species.“, explains Angélica González Barrera, a theologian and expert in dog behavior and training at Waggo.

Jorge Gallego Rodriguez, professor of Emergencies, Internal Medicine and Clinical Toxicology, said: Doing this to pets is negative.

A pet should never be treated like a human being. Just because they’re members of our family doesn’t give us the right to humanize them.. Therefore, in this case we must be very clear about the concept of a multi-type family, which refers to a social nucleus made up of two completely different species, human and animal. There is no merging of species here. What exists is an interaction between two species. It’s important to be clear about this concept and by the way avoid phrases like ‘my son is my pet’.”

Although these displays of love and care may seem healthy and tender, have negative consequences on the behavior of animals.

According to expert Conrado Clavijo, creator, trainer, dog trainer and behavior consultant of the pilo dog training program, humanization can trigger aggression or fear due to the poor adaptation of the animal to risks outside the home.

This is due to excessive protection and actions by the masters. such as charging, walking away, not allowing anal or genital sniffing to other dogs.

Behavioral disorders can also occur in pets, one of the most common separation anxiety and barking within the home can be identified by the appearance of destructive activitygnawing or eating the owner’s clothes, uncontrollable trembling, or grand manifestations that are described as human displays of affection at the moment of reunion.
