The European Union aims to extend the life of products that are designed to fail or wear out in the short or medium term, such as the lifespan of a smartphone.

Currently, support has been extended to three or four years, but now the focus is on increasing the duration of devices to at least five years to reduce energy consumption and production pollution, according to information from the Financial Times.

Extend the repair cycle, increase the life of the mobile battery and also increase the support of software updates.

In this way, it aims to force manufacturers such as Samsung or Apple to keep 15 components of the device in perfect condition for five years, in addition to the user being able to repair any device malfunction on their own.

In the case of batteries, they will need to increase their life cycle to keep their capacity at (at least) 80% after 1,000 full charge cycles; as well as drop and water resistance and duration labels. . . .

The initiative is still expected to be discussed by those concerned.
